Watch This: AOL Originals City.Ballet Web Series

I’ve always loved ballet. As a child, like most little girls, I was fascinated by tutus and ballerinas en pointe, but somehow my dreams didn’t translate: my mom signed me up for jazz and tap classes, instead of ballet. How did that happen?

city.balletAnyway, my failed ballerina dreams aside, I recently read about the AOL On Original web series, City.Ballet, and knew I had to watch it. Last night I sat down and watched season one, which features 12 episodes, each of which are about four-to-seven minutes long, plus fascinating clips about the pointe shoes, makeup, costumes, and more.

All I can say is, you have got to watch it! I didn’t realize it until I dialed up the link, but the series was produced and narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker, and it is so enchanting and wonderfully edited, it left me wanting more. It takes you behind-the-scenes of one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the U.S., the New York City Ballet.

How does one become a professional ballerina? How many pointe shoes do they need? How do the male dancers feel about being in a woman’s world? Watch and be captivated…

  1. I don’t know what it is about SJP and ballet, but she also does the foreword for the New York City Ballet workout DVDs that I own. I am going to check out this series – I danced all my life!
